Sejarah Ladang Prang Besar: Ladang Prang Besar dibuka pada 16 Ogos 1921: “On 16 August 1921, 900 acres of jungle land was granted to nine officers returned from the Great War as the First World War (1914-1918) was known at the time. During the next three years, this acreage was increased to 2026 acres as other officers who had served in the war took up grants of adjacent land given by the Government. It was the policy of the Government of the day to alienate land to serving British officers to encourage rubber cultivation. The original nine officers formed a private company to develop the block of virgin jungle selected by Gough. They named the company Prang Besar Estate Ltd. in commemoration of the Great War, “the war to end all wars”, in which they had fought. The seal or chop adopted by Prang Besar Estate showed a young rubber tree rising out of a shell explosion and was designed by one of the nine, Lt. Commander JC Amcotts, DSC, RN. Another pioneer was Commander GHA Willis, CB, RN, who had a field Ladang Willis named after him. Sir, I have the honour to forward for submission to the Hon'ble the British Resident a note on a visit paid by me recently to the Prang Besar Estate, Kajang. 2. Some publicity has recently been given in the local Press to this experiment in bud-grafting rubber. 3. The action taken by this Department relative to bud-grafting rubber is as follows:- PUBLICATIONS:- Agricultural Bulletin: Vol:IX April-June 1921 No.2, page 108, “Vegetative Reproduction of Selected Stock of Hevea” by J.N.Milsum. Malayan Agricultural Journal: Vol:X, February 1922, No.2, page 47, “Treatment of Buded Hevea Seedlings” by J.N.Milsum. Vol:X, April 1922, No.4, page 112. A Reprint from a Dutch Journal - of a very optimistic tenour. Vol:X, May 1922, No.5, page 121. An editorial suggesting caution and the need for further work. Vol:X, July 1922, No.7, page 174, an editorial by Mr.Belgrave. Review of the first published results of tapping bud-grafts. Ibid: page 178. “Bud Selection in Hevea” by Mr.H.W.Jack. Vol:XI, February 1923, No.2, page 29. Editorial by Mr.Belgrave. This is an important contribution giving valuable advice to planters. Ibid: page 34. A report on Brown Bast experiments in the course of which possible dangers of Bud-grafting are pointed out. In addition to publication numerous demonstrations were given at Headquarters and in Outstations on the technique of Bud-grafting and in July 1922 the Plant Physiologist delivered a very instructive lecture at Malacca in which he advocated that work be undertaken in Malaya. Since July 1922 the position has remained unchanged. Various results published in the Netherlands East Indies shew no finality and give no ground for extreme optimism. 4. In 1922 the question of seed-selection was discussed by the Advisory Committee and, in view of the financial situation, experiments thereanent were shelved. Afterwards the formation of a “Co-operative Society for Bud-grafting and Seed Selection” was discussed. This has been side-tracked in view of the creation of a Rubber Research Institute. 5. At present a few Estates (notably Prang Besar) are laying down bud-grafts but apparently, not in such a way as will admit of precision in deduction from results. At Prang Besar Estate for example (an excellently run Estate) the factors of seed selection, soil conservation and close planting (with a view to thinning out the bad ones) have to be borne in mind. If, as we all hope, success above other Estates is achieved this will not necessarily be a result of bud-grafting. 6. It is now proposed by articles in the Malayan Agricultural Journal to stress the desirability of measures by each considerable Estate for the provision of its own bud-wood - merely as an insurance if nothing else. Ladang Prang Besar memohon sebidang tanah di dalam Hutan Simpan Bangi untuk tujuan penyelidikan tanaman getah.

CATATAN: Permohonan ini diluluskan, namun penyelidikan di situ tidak dapat bertahan lama akibat gangguan haiwan liar Hutan Simpan Bangi: “As far back as 1924, Gough established two seed gardens, each protected against pollinating agents from outside by some 25 chains of jungle. His diary recorded his objective: “To discover three types of improved breeding value”. These gardens situated in the Bangi jungle had to be abandoned because of attack by monkeys and other predators. Later seed gardens were successfully established within coconut plantations located on the Bagan Datoh peninsula in Lower Perak. Seedlings from the Prang Besar Isolation Garden (PBIG) and Prang Besar Gough Garden (PBIG-GG) have been widely planted in Malaysia and overseas.” (VD Nair, 1990-an: |"The Story of Prang Besar Estate").
